Our Club

Port Stephens Yacht Club is more than a sailing club — it’s a community.

From Wednesday afternoon sails and Saturday spinnaker races to our Friday Twilight Series, this is where locals, visitors, and crew of all experience levels come together. After racing, members gather for a BBQ meal, swap stories from the water, and enjoy the friendships that grow through a shared love of sailing.

The Friday Twilight Series marks the end of the week with relaxed inshore racing and post-race gatherings hosted by our friends at D’Albora Marina Nelson Bay — complete with woodfired pizzas and drinks. It’s casual, fun, and one of the best ways to unwind with your friends and crew.

Across the club, we foster an inclusive spirit — from Women on Water to social events, regattas, offshore sprints, and long-standing traditions. Our partnerships with the three D’Albora Marinas in Port Stephens and other local businesses keep the club vibrant and connected to the broader community.

Whether you’re an experienced sailor, a curious first-timer, or someone who simply enjoys the social side of the sport, there’s a place for you here.

Our History

The club began in 1971 as the Port Stephens Yacht Squadron, based at Soldiers Point, a location steeped in maritime and military history. The Squadron’s burgee — an orange flag with a black cannon — paid homage to the garrison stationed at Soldiers Point in 1820, whose role was to guard the settlement against escapees from Sydney. The cannon emblem remains part of our identity today.

In the early years, racing was grassroots and spirited, with small fleets of keen locals launching from Soldiers Point to test themselves against the tides and winds of the Bay. Over the decades, PSYC became a fixture in the region’s sailing calendar, hosting club races, interclub challenges, and community regattas.

In 2003, the Squadron evolved into the Port Stephens Yacht Club, carrying forward its traditions while embracing new opportunities to grow. The fleet expanded, race formats diversified, and the club became known not just for competitive sailing, but for its warm welcome and post-race camaraderie.

Our events now range from long-standing Saturday inshore and offshore races, Wednesday afternoon non-spinnaker race series, to the Friday Twilight Series and fun social sails. While the boats have modernised and the fleet has grown, the essence remains unchanged: friends on the water, friendly rivalry, and stories shared over a drink or BBQ at the end of the day.

More than fifty years since its first start gun, PSYC continues to honour its heritage while fostering a vibrant sailing community for the future. The Bay, the boats, and the people make it a place where the spirit of sailing — past and present — thrives
